About Bafut Palace
The Bafut Palace is a significant cultural heritage site located in Northwest Cameroon that serves as the official residence of the traditional ruler, or Fon.
Architectural Blend:
The complex features over 50 buildings combining traditional grassfields architecture—such as thatch roofs and bamboo walls—with colonial styles introduced during the rebuilding after the 1907 German-Bafut War.
Spiritual Core: At the center of the courtyard is the Achum Shrine, a sacred hall built of wood and thatch that is only accessible to the Fon and high-ranking elders for rituals.
Cultural Center: The palace is surrounded by a sacred forest used for traditional rites, and it functions as a living museum for artifacts, royal regalia, and traditional dance performances.
UNESCO Recognition: Included on UNESCO's Tentative List of World Heritage Sites since 2006, it has been a center of political power for over 400 years.
